Marvel FMCG is proud to be partnered with Nc’nean Distillery on their search for a Head of Finance who will be responsible for driving commercial decision-making whilst maintaining a robust and fit-for-purpose finance function, contributing to the continued growth of the company.

Why this role?

  • You will be joining the UK’s first net zero whisky distillery which is proud to be B Corp certified.
  • Opportunity to influence and be part of the future growth and development of Nc’nean.
  • Develop a commercially focused finance function that supports decision-making.
  • Ensure that Nc’nean has a robust finance function to underpin future growth.

The role …

You’ll have the opportunity to drive the continuous improvement of the in-house finance function – from taking care of the day-to-day running of the distillery’s finances to contributing towards its future growth and development. Working closely with the CEO, other members of the senior leadership and a very experienced board, you will enable the distillery to continue its next stage of growth.

You will be comfortable working in a standalone role within an SME environment, with the support of an outsourced bookkeeping and payroll function. It will be part of your remit to get the best out of the resources in place and develop a plan for best practices as the business evolves.

The brand is already trading worldwide so there is plenty of variety and challenge in the role. This will include developing relationships with key funding partners, participating in board level strategy discussions and shaping the future of the finance function. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to use your analytical ability to understand the ‘Why?’ and apply your commercial acumen to answer ‘What if?’ questions, analyse problems, evaluate alternatives and suggest solutions.

Key to your role will be creating a commercially focused finance function that drives decision-making. With responsibility for a complex forecasting model, strong excel skills and a detailed understanding of the challenges unique to distilling whisky will be key to your long-term success. You will have the opportunity to make positive contributions to the long-term strategy of the business, with responsibility for updating the board on performance and recommending future strategy.

You'll be somebody who is has a keen eye for detail as the role encompasses the day to day (ensuring everything from the bookkeeping and running monthly COGS journals etc is running smoothly) as well as more strategic thinking, calculating equity returns in a long-term forecasting model with the commercial acumen and gravitas to regularly report to the board.

Who are Nc’nean Distillery?

Nc’nean is a Scottish whisky distillery with a difference. The UK’s first net zero whisky distillery, B Corp certified, female-led and with accolades from near and far for the product, this is not your run-of-the-mill Scotch company. Sustainability runs through its veins: this is a brand that is making a difference and is very well-placed in today’s market.

Your experience

With a base in central London and the distillery based on the west coast of Scotland, there is plenty of flexibility as to where you could be located. You will need to be able to travel to London two to four times a month for team and board meetings with occasional trips to the distillery. It would be helpful to have worked remotely / in a hybrid setting previously.

You’ll be a qualified accountant with a curiosity and desire to find solutions and answer difficult questions. Comfortable operating at c-suite level, you will have well-developed relationship-building and stakeholder management skills. Presenting the numbers in a succinct manner will be second nature to you, but critically you will be someone who can translate these into commercial outcomes.

You’ll likely have at least three years PQE experience and ideally will understand the challenges that present a small but growing business as well as possess a clear understanding of what good looks like, probably developed in a more established environment. Experience within FMCG industry would be nice, and whisky would be even better!
